The Global Distinguished Educator Program (GDE) of Zhejiang University is a part-time program that recruits world-class scholars with teaching talent from overseas. The GDE fellow will offer high-quality undergraduate and graduate courses, and deepen the international exchange and collaboration in education and teaching.
I. Eligibility
To be eligible for the GDE program, applicants must meet the following criteria:
(1)Under the age of 65 by Jan 31st, 2024.
(2)Have a good understanding of Chinese culture and values, and agree with the spirit and core values of Zhejiang University.
(3)Have made outstanding academic achievements and great international academic influence.
(4)Winners of prestigious awards in their respective fields, including but not limited to the Nobel Prize, Fields Medal, Turing Award, Lasker Medical Research Award, Pulitzer Prize, and Wolf Prize; academicians in major developed countries; full professors from top universities (ranked among the top 20 in one of the 4 major ranking systems: QS, THE, US News, ARWU in 2024) or leading disciplines (ranked among the top 10); scholars working at prominent international organizations, and have received prestigious teaching awards or published best-selling textbooks.
II. Responsibilities
GDE fellows are responsible for the following duties:
(1)In each academic year, teach at least one high-quality course, either a new course or an existing one at the undergraduate or graduate level. This course should be either a General Education Course or one required in the curriculum of a major.
(2)GDE fellows can teach the course independently or jointly with faculty members from Zhejiang University. The course should be taught in person. The fellow's direct instruction in the classroom should be at least 24 class hours per academic year, and the fellow should be on campus for at least two weeks in a row.
(3)In addition to teaching, GDE fellows are expected to actively contribute to the development of high-quality courses and textbooks, establish international collaborations in teaching, and mentor junior professors in improving their teaching capabilities.
III. Financial support
GED fellows will be compensated at a rate that is competitive internationally. The amount will be determined based on their teaching experience and workload.
IV. Application and Evaluation
(1)Following application submission, relevant schools or departments will conduct initial reviews to identify qualified candidates. The university-level committee will then comprehensively evaluate qualified candidates based on their teaching experience, course design, pedagogical approaches, and workload expectations.
(2)The initial term of appointment is 1 year. The subsequent term of appointment is 1-4 years. The fellows are expected to start teaching within one year after signing the employment agreement, and be evaluated at the end of each term.
